Newport, RI – There will be quite a celebration in July on Lower Thames Street in Newport when KC & the Sunshine Band take the main stage at International Yacht Restoration School’s 21st Annual IYRS Summer Gala.
“The Summer Gala is the biggest and most important fundraiser of the year for IYRS. As one of the main events of Newport in the summer, the Gala attracts a high demographic audience and has been called Newport’s largest gathering of exceptional people; a great crowd for a very important educational cause. The Gala raises about 40% of our annual operating costs the night of the event! Not everyone in America should go to a degree school, and IYRS is proof of an alternative: 90% of grads go to great jobs – from major marine trades companies to technology companies like Autodesk and Google X. Support us as we help change learning in America,” the website for the event states.
Tickets range from $400 for a general ticket to $50,000 for a Title Level Sponsorship.

“KC and the Sunshine Band are still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced into the music scene 40 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey – KC for short – developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, giving us an impressive string of hits like “GET DOWN TONIGHT”, “THAT’S THE WAY (I LIKE IT)” and “SHAKE YOUR BOOTY”,” a Facebook Event for the Gala states. “With sales of over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and an American Music Award, KC and the Sunshine Band was one of the most progressive bands of the 70’s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music!”
KC & the Sunshine Band will follow in the recent footsteps of Kool & The Gang (2017), Jackson Browne (2016), The Beach Boys (2015), Lyle Lovett (2014) and Jimmy Buffett (2013) when they perform at the 2018 IYRS Summer Gala on Saturday, July 7th. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 pm and conclude at 11 pm.
“KC and the Sunshine Band play over 100 live shows annually, circling the country and playing dates regularly throughout Europe, Australia, and South America. In 2008, KC celebrated 35 years entertaining us, writing songs, performing around the world and he has no intention of stopping. KC’s songs have stood the test of time and you can ask any one of the thousands of fans who spend the entire concert on their feet, dancing and shaking their booty,” the event states.
The 2018 IYRS Summer Gala will be Co-Chaired by Anne Hamilton and Kimberly Palmer.
