Following the announcement that Newport City Councilor At-Large John Florez would be stepping down from City Council effective January 9th, 2018, the City of Newport has issued the following press release.

The Office of the Mayor announces the resignation of City Councilor-at-Large, John Florez, effective January 9, 2018.  The City appreciates the service of Councilor Florez over the past three years and wishes him well in his future endeavors.

The Mayor’s Office would like to invite Newport residents interested in filling the at-large Council position to submit a letter of interest detailing why you would like to serve for the remainder of the current Council term (January 9  through December 1, 2018).   Please include your resume along with the cover letter and submit to the Office of the Mayor, City Hall, 43 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840. The Charter for the City of Newport states that any vacancies arising from resignation in the membership of the Council shall be filled by four affirmative votes of the remaining members of the Council within thirty days after the Council learns of the vacancy, or in the event of a tie vote or inability to elect, the vacancy shall be filled as soon thereafter as possible by a majority vote if all the remaining members of the Council; provided, however, the Council shall provide for the public solicitation of applicants.
