Newport Fire Department and mutual aid responded to a house fire on 2nd Street in The Point section of Newport just before midnight on Tuesday.

Crews fought the fire at two historic homes, 18 and 20 2nd Street, into the early hours of Wednesday, Providence Canteen responded to assist firefighters on scene.

Both homes, that were built in the 1800’s and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, suffered heavy damage.

One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, there were no other reported injuries.
