On Saturday, July 8 at 5 pm, Italy will make its sixth campaign to capture the silver trophy against USA, with its most formidable team to date in the NBC10 Newport International Polo Series, Presented by BMW.

Playing for Italy will be captain Marco Elser, and Roman teammates Massimo Elser, Peter Elser, Lanfranco di Campello and Marcos Antinori, fresh from a victorious tournament in Italy last week.

“This team is hungry for something more than pasta,” explained Dan Keating, USA team captain and founder of the Polo Series.

The polo match will have a duration of approximately 2 hours, during which a weekly door prize drawing from Veuve Clicquot Champagne and the Best Tailgate prize from Stella Artois will be awarded.  After 6 periods, called chukkers, the match will conclude with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation, as well as an autograph signing and cocktail hour to mingle with the players and a special Après Polo: Italian Scallion summer buffet by the popular Newport eatery, Pasta Beach, sold separately by advanced reservation (deadline to RSVP is today, Thurs. July 6, 5pm).

Tickets to the match ($12 for General Admission and $20 for Pavilion seating) andreservations to the après polo dinner are available at www.nptpolo.com. Valet Parking service, boutique vendors and food & beverage concessionaires will be present in the Hospitality village at the polo grounds, including the Twisted Pony Bar and the Newport Polo Pro Shop.

The Italian players hail from Rome, home of the oldest of Italy’s 15 polo clubs, a significant footprint for the sport where only about one hundred and fifty players play year-round, even on beaches and on frozen Alpine lakes in winter.  Italy has risen to prominence on the international stage of polo in recent years, winning bronze after defeating England in the last FIP World Championship.   U.S. shores have been a little less friendly as the team remains out to claim the elusive USA vs. Italy perpetual cup.

The team will tour the famed Newport Mansions, enjoy helicopter tours with Birds Eye View, scooting around town with Scooter World coups, paddle boarding and surfing with Island Surf & Sport, tennis on the legendary courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, sail on 12 meter racing yachts with America’s Cup Charters, enjoy fine dining and dancing at the Clarke Cooke House, and all the great goings on in the City by the Sea.
