The inaugural Newport Contemporary Music Series must go on without Philip Glass and the Philip Glass Ensemble.
The legendary group was scheduled to perform on July21st and 22nd at Rogers High School.
The event on July 21st was scheduled to include an evening piece composed by Maestro Glass, featuring Philip Glass and the ensemble music director, Michael Riesman on the keyboard.
On July 22nd, organizers were inviting the public to join them for an intimate evening with Maestro Philip Glass as they celebrate his 80th birthday and his career in music. The evening was scheduled to commence by a performance of the “Tirol Concerto”, featuring their music director Paul Van Anglen on piano accompanied by the Newport Contemporary Arts Orchestra, followed by a moderated discussion with Mr. Glass, with intermittent pauses where the composer will approach the piano to perform several of his compositions.
Newport Contemporary Arts Incorporated is a Rhode Island based non-profit organization (501c3), founded by native Rhode Islander, Paul Van Anglen. His vision for his newly established organization is to revitalize the Newport, and Rhode Island’s arts community through its inaugural event, the Newport Contemporary Music Series.
“The Philip Glass events we were going to have on were very unfortunately canceled,” Anglen told What’sUpNewp on Friday afternoon. Although it’s rather last minute, Anglen hopes to fill that weekend with another event.
No reason was given for why the event was canceled.
The series goal is to further the creation of contemporary music through innovative concerts and events that incorporate all music that is considered contemporary, ranging from Pierre Boulez, Andre Previn, The Beatles, Jazz, Film Music, and everything in between. They also aim to commission a wide variety of composers and create an education program that provides students with hands on experiences with world class visiting artists.
The opening night concert to kick off the inaugural season will take place on July 1st at Rogers.
