The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Newport and our surrounding area, the Winter Storm Warning is in effect from6 a.m. on Thursday until 8 p.m. on Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin between 5 and 8 am Thursday morning. Snow will then fall heavy at times through Thursday afternoon before tapering off to snow showers early Thursday evening.

Thursday: Rain and snow, becoming all snow after 11am. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow after 11am. Temperature falling to around 26 by 5pm. Windy, with a north wind 16 to 21 mph increasing to 23 to 28 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 8 to 12 inches possible.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of snow before 10pm. Areas of blowing snow before 10pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 13. Wind chill values as low as -4. Blustery, with a northwest wind 18 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

* HAZARD TYPES...Heavy snow.

* Accumulations...Snow accumulation of 12 to 18 inches.

* Timing...Snow will begin between 5 and 8 am this morning.

  Snow will then fall heavy at times through this afternoon

  before tapering off to snow showers early this evening.

* Impacts...Hazardous travel due to snow covered roads and poor

  visibilities. Intense snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour

  will be possible at times along with some blowing and drifting

  snow.

* Winds...North 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather

conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow

are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
