Catherine Lois Cayer, 73, of Portsmouth, died on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Newport Hospital. Catherine was born January 17, 1943 in Newport, RI, the daughter of the late Louis G. and Esther A. (Bird) Sylvia.

Mrs. Cayer retired in 2010 from a 33 year career at NUSC/NUWC. She grew up in Newport and graduated from Rogers High School and was a resident of Portsmouth since 1978. Catherine was a parishioner and choir member of St. Barnabas Church, a member of the Newport Navy Choristers, and an avid Bingo player at Knights of Columbus Hall in Tiverton, RI.

She is survived by her life partner, Anthony G. Tobben, BMC, USN (Ret); her daughter Laurie Perry Fischer and her husband Bob of Dracut, MA and her son Eric Soares and his wife Helena of Middletown, RI, one sister Rae Ballinger of Springfield, IL, and two grandchildren; grandson, Dustin Soares of Bristol, RI; granddaughter, Caitlin Cloutier and her husband Patrick of Quebec; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Cayer, her son Anthony Soares, and her sister Joyce Fernandes.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, January 18 from 4:00-7:00pm at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, January 19 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.

Burial will take place at a later date.
