Barrel aged beers seem to be the new thing this year a lot of breweries are participating in. The fun thing about barrel-aging beer is that you can age beers for however many years you want (for the most part). With higher percentage beers, you don’t want to age more than 3 years. After the 3 year mark the can taste more sour or eventually go bad.
There are a lot of liquors and wines you can age beer in from Gin to Whiskey or Pinot Noir to Chardonnay barrels giving the beer more of a sweet taste and more to the liking of a spirits or wine drinker. Beers such as Porters or Imperial Stouts are better to age as they get boozier the longer they do age.
As most of you know, Here at the Wharf we like to have a variety and especially get in the limited stuff for our guests. Here are some of our favorite barrel aged beers that are coming down the pipeline this week and next at the Pub!
Brooklyn Improved Old Fashion – Brooklyn, NY – Part of they’re Brooklyn Quarterly Experiment Series, Improved Old Fashion is a Barrel aged Rye ale aged in Whistle Pig’s Rye Whiskey Barrels with Demerara and Candi Sugar as well as some bitters on the end giving it a sweet finish.
Left Hand Brewing Wake Up Dead – Longmont, CO – Left Hand’s Seasonal Russian Imperial Stout that is aged for about four months in the cellar at the brewery. Wake Up Dead has hints of raisins, black licorice, coffee and chocolate with a slight booze finish.
Foolproof Revery – Pawtucket, RI– Russian Imperial Stout that is a blend of Northern Brewer, Tettnanger and Hallertau hops made with Chocolate and Flaked Oat malts for a rich finish.
Beer’d Realization – Stonington, CT – Beer’d Double IPA aged in Berkshire Distiller’s Ethereal Gin Barrels for six months. Has floral and botanical notes.
Uinta Brewing Crooked Line Cockeyed Cooper – Salt Lake City, UT – Aged in Bourbon barrels with splashes of vanilla, chocolate and dried fruit. Available on our Large Format Bottle List
