Sail Newport will host both the Red Bull Foiling Generation U.S. Qualifier and the World Finals off the coast of Fort Adams over the next two weekends, October 15 – 16 and October 22 – 23.

The U.S. Qualifier is set to take place on October 15th & 16th, the World Finals will take place on October 22nd & 23rd. Each weekend, competition is scheduled to take place on Saturday 10 AM – 5 PM and Sunday from 10 AM – 1 PM, followed by an Awards Ceremony.

The best place to enjoy the action is from Fort Adams State Park, where admission and parking is free. There will also be concessions and activities available on-site. Both weekends are weather dependent.

Red Bull Foiling Generation is about providing talented young sailors, ages 16 – 20 with the opportunity to advance their careers through top-notch hydrofoil racing. The competitions serve as training waters for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, which caters to competitors ages 19-25. Both competitions train youth sailors from all over the globe on smaller versions of catamaran racers with foils, like those used in one of the world’s most famous sailing competition – America’s Cup.

In the spirit of progression, Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher devised this new 6 meter catamaran that is redefining what’s possible on the open ocean. It’s a vessel that can reach eye-popping speeds of 36 knots while hardly being affected by the ocean conditions. How, you ask? Because it doesn’t sail on the surface of the ocean, but uses a hydro-foil to lift the cat above the water and over the chop while still maintaining maximum speeds. So, we’ll let you be the judge…is this the future of sailing?

Red Bull Foiling Generation is working in partnership with US Sailing and the non-profit Sail Newport, New England’s premiere public sailing center, which will host both events.

U.S. Qualifier – October 15 & 16

Fifteen teams of agile and talented sailing youth from across the country were chosen to participate in the first ever US Qualifier of the Red Bull Foiling Generation sailing competition in Newport on October 15th and 16th.

Among those competing in the U.S. Quarter Finals is Brendan Read, the son of Sail Newport’s Executive Director Brad Read. Brendan was accepted to compete with his partner, Gordon Gurnell, via an application process.

Industry experts in partnership with US Sailing were recruited to evaluate possible competitors based on their sharp sailing skills, athleticism and smart decision-making. Arriving on October 12th, all pre-chosen teams will be trained on handling the speed and delicacy of these unique and expensive sail boats by the most accomplished competitive sailors in the world, who are also the event’s founders: double Olympic gold medalists, Austrians Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher.

The winning team of the competitive weekend will stay in Newport to compete against the world’s best at the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final.

The U.S. Qualifier is set to take place on Saturday, October 15th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, October 16th from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., followed by an Awards Ceremony.

The best place to enjoy the action is from Fort Adams State Park, where admission and parking is free. There will also be concessions and activities available on-site. Racing is weather dependent.
