Legendary voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa left Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Friday evening and according the ships live tracker, is expected to stop in Newport, RI today.
Currently the Polynesian ship is approximately 4 nautical miles from Newport, the ship is currently on a historic Worldwide Voyage covering more than 60,000 nautical miles, 100 ports, and 27 nations.
UPDATE: Hōkūle‘a and her crew will be hosting canoe tours, free and open to the public from 2 pm to 5pm today at Sail Newport, at Fort Adams State Park, weather permitting. Head down to meet the crew, hear about the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage and take a peek at the wa‘a!
Hōkūleʻa is a double-hull sailing vessel that voyages without the use of modern instruments, using stars, winds and waves to navigate from destination to destination. During this New England leg, the crew is honoring Native American tribes in the region and teaching and learning about traditions and practices of protecting cultural and environmental resources.
