Norma Lee (Defoor) Houtchens, 80, of 32 Continental Drive, Middletown, RI, passed on July 15, 2016 at the Village House Nursing Home in Newport, RI, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Horace Paul Houtchens.

Born in Oklaunion, OK on February 19, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Hestel and Stella (Davis) Defoor. She graduated from Oklaunion High School.

Mrs. Houtchens worked as a Real Estate Agent for many years, and later at the James Maher Center as a caregiver. She later opened her own business “Grandma Norma’s Treasures”, which re-purposed prom dresses and tuxedos for children’s play time costumes. She was also a member of the “Famed” Pink Flamingo Club and an avid golfer. She enjoyed painting and she was the ultimate caregiver, no stray animal or human ever went hungry or homeless on her watch.

She is survived by her children, Horace Paul Houtchens Jr. of Warwick, RI, Ralph D. Houtchens of Ohio, Scott Houtchens of Boston, MA, and Jocasta Kay Houtchens-Lazo of Middletown, RI. She also leaves her brothers Jack Defoor and his wife Anita of Texas, James Defoor and his wife Frances of Texas, her sisters Doris Gaither and her husband James of Oklahoma, Mary McElroy of Oklahoma, her sister in law Brenda Defoor of Oklahoma and nine grandchildren, Katharine Vilardo, Peter J. Houtchens, Karrisa Houtchens, Julie C. Houtchens, Chloe Smith, Cory Lazo, Scott B. Houtchens Jr., Samantha Houtchens and Justice B. Moore, and three great grandchildren, Skyler and Jacoby Vilardo and Noah Smith.

She was preceded in death by her brother Garland Defoor, grandchildren Trey and Ashley Houtchens, and brother in law Larry McElroy.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 21 from 4:00-6:00PM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, with a prayer service to be held at 6:00pm in the funeral home.
