The 2nd Annual Rhode Island Scholar Athlete Awards were held on Sunday evening at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick.

75 student-athletes from across Rhode Island were expected to be honored at the 2016 Rhode Island Scholar Athlete Awards, the Keynote Speaker scheduled for the event was Tim Wakefield.

The 13 high schools participating in the event included Barrington High School, BayView Academy, Bristol-Warren, East Greenwich High School, East Providence High School, Middletown High School, Narragansett High School, North Kingstown High School, Portsmouth High School, The Prout School, Rogers High School, South Kingstown High School and Tiverton High School, according to the event website.

Athletes are selecting to be honorees of the award in the following way; “Athletic Directors from high schools across Rhode Island will select well-rounded student-athletes that exemplify aptitude, spirit and leadership on and off the field.”

24 of the 75 student-athletes that were set to be honored (on the event’s website) were from 4 Newport County high schools; 6 from Middletown High School, 6 from Portsmouth High School, 6 from Rogers High School and 6 from Tiverton High School.

While the mailing address for “Rhode Island Scholar Athlete Awards” on its site is the same as the Newport Daily News mailing address, it has not been made clear who organizes or is responsible for this event when viewing its website and social media channels.
