What’sUpNewp has taken notice of the ever-growing craft beer community, scene and business in Newport and is excited to announce the launch of our weekly column dedicated to craft beer. This column will run every Friday and will be written by our staff and other members of our community that are lovers of craft beer.

There are plenty of great local brews and microbrews from around the world to be had and enjoyed at some of the finest pubs and restaurants in Newport.

Note: This story was originally published on August 31st, 2015. It was updated on April 7th, 2016 to remove Yesterday’s (since they have permanently closed) from our list.

Question is – do you know where to go? We’ve got you covered with a look at some of our favorite places for a great brew.

What bar or restaurant do you think serves up the best selection of craft beer? Take the poll below!

In no particular order, here are the top 10 great places for craft beer in Newport, RI!

It would be down right wrong for us to tell ya of where all the great pubs, bars, and restaurants are in Newport and NOT mention Newport’s own Newport Storm Brewery. Put some time aside and fit in a brewery tour – they are open every day except Tuesday (that’s bottling day of course!).

Newport Storm Brewery | 293 JT Connell Road| (401) 849-5232

The Wharf Pub  offers more than 20 New England draft beers on draft and many more great options in their very extensive beer list. In the spring, summer and fall, you can find many other great New England brews out on their new back porch. Pair a great selection of craft beer with creative comfort food made from scratch and Wharf Pub will be “the place to be at” in 2016.

The Wharf Pub | 37 Bowens Wharf | (401) 619-5672

Featuring over 150 Microbrews – Norey’s Star Restaurant is for the ultimate beer lover. Noreys offers an extensive wine list and live music each and every Wednesday night. It could be said Norey’s Star Restaurant is Newport’s greatest place for beer lovers. We wouldn’t argue that at all.

Norey’s Star Restaurant | 156 Broadway | (401) 847-4971

If you think about Brick Alley Pub and don’t think about their great craft beer selection, you’re drinking your way through this town wrong. Brick Alley throughout 2014 and 2015 brought in very limited release beers, like Goose Island’s Black Friday Release, where they were the only place in the state you could find the brew. They’ve done a great job of supporting the RI local craft beer scene and it shows with their relationship with Grey Sail (one of few places you can find Captain’s Daughter throughout the most popular time for the brew) and other local breweries. Brick Alley works hard to bring in great seasonal craft beers, limited releases and some of the hottest selling new brews. Keep an eye out for their updated beer menus as they change with each season, and DO NOT MISS their craft beer dinners.

Brick Alley Pub | 140 Thames Street | (401) 849-6334

Tommy and his crew at Malt on Broadway feature 31 draft beers and more many more in bottle. A bonus? They also offer many Single Malts, Bourbons,& Irish Whiskeys.

Pour Judgement is known by locals for their great affordable food and an extensive selection of craft beer. With on average 18 draft beers, 14 large format bottles, mead, and more than 16 bottled brews to choose from it certainly is a great place for a nightcap or lunchtime cold one. Home of the famous $9 burger & a beer, Pour Judgement live’s up to its motto of “A Night Out Without Spending A Day’s Pay” .

Pour Judgement Bar & Grill | 32 Broadway | (401) 619-2115

Tavern On Broadway has really stepped up their craft beer game, they now offer more than 25 beers on draught and many more available in bottle. Their selection of brews spans craft beer from all over the United States and often they are hosting special events with new breweries that have come to Rhode Island, in 2014 and 2015 they hosted great events with Lagunitas and Baxter Brewing. Keep an eye on Tavern On Broadway as they continue to add new tap lines and a great craft beer selection to the craft beer scene in Newport.

Tavern On Broadway | 16 Broadway | (401) 619-5675

Buskers Pub is “Newport’s Gastropub” – a pub that serves high quality food. With great food, an authentic Irish atmosphere, and weekly live entertainment – the extensive choice of great draught beers from this side of Atlantic and that side of Atlantic will keep you coming back for more. Keep an eye on Buskers, they often have brewery tap takeovers and offer 2, 3, 4 or even more from one brewery at a time on draught.

Buskers Irish Pub | 178 Thames Street | (401-) 846-5856

There’s just something about a bar that has a beer brewed exclusively for them. The Harpoon Oyster Stout is nutritious and delicious and a must try. Midtown Oyster Bar also does a great job of rotating their draft and bottle selection to try new craft beers from around the region and country.

Midtown Oyster Bar | 345 Thames Street | (401) – 619-4100

Hand-crafted on the premises, all of their ales and lagers are 100% natural and delicious. It’s the kind of taste and the kind of freshness that isn’t available anywhere but a brewpub like Coddington Brewing Company.
