Members of the public and media are invited to the Newport Art Museum on Sunday, February 28th at 2pm for a Gallery Talk with exhibiting artist Mary Dondero.
Learn more about the vision, processes and inspiration behind her elusive and atmospheric prints and drawings. Members of the Chamber Ensemble, the most advanced adult string ensemble in the Community String Project and representing the finest musicians trained by CSP’s innovative music program, will also be performing as part of the Museum’s Music in the Galleries program.
Mary Dondero’s exhibition, “Small Points in Time,” is on view through May 1, 2016. Sunday’s Gallery Talk is free with museum admission, and will give guests an opportunity to hear directly from the artist in an informal setting. “Small Points in Time” draws inspiration from both natural environments and the artist’s individual sense of place. Rather than pin down a simple, observable subject, this exhibition aims to instead capture and abstract the hidden beauty behind the elusive, fleeting feelings and experiences within the “constant state of impermanence in which we live.”

Heavily inspired by Narragansett Bay, Dondero leverages paint, ink, pastel and photographic images to visually expresses a cursory connection to nature, drawing inspiration from shifting factors such as temperature, humidity, and tides. The resulting work evokes a relationship to nature that is at once both personal to the artist, yet familiar to the viewer.
Dondero, who is a member of Imago Gallery in Warren, RI, is an award-winning artist who earned First Place in the category of prints/pastels at the Museum’s 2015 Newport Annual, and has received numerous accolades from institutions such as the Providence Art Club, Colorado’s Center for Fine Art Photography, California’s Museum of Anthropology, and New York’s foto Gallery. She holds an MAT from RISD, MFA from UMass Dartmouth, and BFA from Roger Williams University, and is professor of artDrawing inspiration from both natural environment and the artist’s individual sense of place.
Mary Dondero: Small Points in Time will run through May 1, 2016 in the Museum’s Ilgenfritz Gallery. The Newport Art Museum is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue. For more information visit NewportArtMuseum.org or call 401-848-8200.
