Mary Brennan Tourism Award

Award Received at RI Hospitality Association’s 26th Annual “Stars of the Industry” Awards Ceremony

The RI Hospitality Association (RIHA) recently awarded Sail Newport, R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Discover Newport and Newport Hospitality, Inc. with the “Mary Brennan Tourism Award” at the 26th Annual Meeting and “Stars of the Industry” awards ceremony at Twin River Casino.

The organizations were honored for being instrumental in bringing the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover to Newport this past summer. It was recently announced that the Race will return to Rhode Island in 2018, as the only North American Stopover in the round-the-world marathon.

The Mary Brennan Tourism Award is honor of Mary Brennan, the official den mother of tourism in Rhode Island. Mary served as the Director of Marketing for the Rhode Island Airport Corporation until her passing in 1996. She helped lay the foundation for many of the tourism initiatives in place today. Each year, the RIHA recognizes a hospitality professional or organization that shares Mary’s dedication to promoting tourism in Rhode Island.

“It is with great honor that we recognize Sail Newport, R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Discover Newport and Newport Hospitality, Inc. with this award,” said Dale J. Venturini, President and CEO of RIHA. “They have spent countless hours, days, and months working as a team to bring one of the biggest tourism initiatives to date to Rhode Island.”
