Newport Hospitality, Inc. was awarded a prestigious Gala Award for Best Multiple-Day Event Program for a Corporation or Association at The Special Event Conference awards ceremony in Orlando, FL.

The award was earned for the company’s role as the appointed DMC partner for the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover in May 2015. Leading a team of more than 100 vendors over a period of 12 days, the assignment totaled 30 overlapping corporate programs throughout the state including 65 unique events plus local activities, 20-plus hotels, and hundreds of vehicle charters.

The Volvo Ocean Race is an intense worldwide sailing competition that takes place over nine months with ten stopovers across the globe. The 2014-15 edition of the race included Newport, RI as the sole North American stopover. Sail Newport, the local port organizer for the race selected Newport Hospitality as their DMC partner to handle corporate hotel bookings and events. The Volvo Ocean Race returns to Newport in May 2018!

The Gala Awards are given by Special Events magazine, the premier industry publication, recognizing the finest work in special events worldwide. For the 2016 Gala Awards, the magazine received entries in 35 categories from nine countries: Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India, Ireland, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Members of the Special Events magazine Advisory Board, made up of leaders in the event profession, review all entries to determine the nominees and winners.

The Gala Awards were given out on Jan. 14 at a black-tie ceremony at The Special Event 2016 in Orlando, Fla.

Ryan Belmore is the Owner and Publisher of What'sUpNewp. Although not the founder or original owner, Belmore has been with What'sUpNewp since its early beginnings in 2012.

Belmore was born in Providence, Rhode Island; grew up and graduated high school in Coventry, Rhode Island; and lived in Newport, Rhode Island for more than ten years. He currently serves as Vice President of the Board Of Directors for Fort Adams Trust and on the Board of Directors for Potter League For Animals.

He and his wife, Jen, as well as their two dogs (Aero and June), recently moved to Alexandria, Virginia. Belmore travels back and forth to Newport every couple of weeks to cover events, work on story ideas, to meet with What'sUpNewp's on-the-ground contributors, to visit friends, and to eat as much seafood as possible.
