Le Petit Cafe, Le Petit Gourmet & Newport Wine Cellar will be hosting French Cooking Classes with Chef Julien Charvet (Concept Chef) from Wednesday, November 18th – Sunday, November 22nd.

The hand’s on cooking class comes with wine, instruction and dinner.
Chef Charvet is a classically trained French Chef with a passion for food and wine, who loves to teach! He comes to Newport from beautiful Avignon, in the south of France, where he owns and operates his own restaurant and a cooking school in Les Halles. He is accomplished, but more than that, he is a lot of fun!
You will do all the work, so don’t expect to just watch.
After you prepare a beautiful French meal, they will talk wine and enjoy the meal that you have prepared, so plan on being there for a few hours! Classes include, instruction, experience and dinner paired with wines. (Yes, you can practice your French, too!)
This will focus on classic French meals prepared with local ingredients. Each meal is designed around a concept, and they will source our ingredient from local farms. That said, menus will be announced at the time of the class.

Here are the classes that will be offered this week;
Wednesday, November 18th 6-9pm – $95
Burgundy: No other region is as elusive and, at the same time, so highly sought after. The foods and wines of Burgundy are satisfying because they are rich, flavorful, and still elegant. This class will focus on the earthier flavors of fall, squashes, mushrooms, meats and cheeses that are regionally appropriate, and for wines, pinot and chardonnay, of course! This region bespeaks a certain quality of elegance and power that is a reflection of the import they carry in their culture; the wines and the foods of Burgundy are elevated in status, under high demand because they are special, unique, and so damn good…join us and find out for yourself.
Thursday, November 19th 6-9pm – $95
Provence: The warmth of the South of France is evident in the landscape, the climate, the people, the wines, and the foods. In an effort to produce a traditional Provencal. This menu will make use of all parts of our fall harvest: root vegetables and lots of greens, some fish, some meats, and naturally a goat cheese or two. The wines from the southern Cotes du Rhone are strong, intense wines with a touch of a wine side. They are primarily Grenache, with Syrah, Cinsault, Mouvedre, Carignan, and a handful of others. The varietals are used to make delicate roses, diverse whites that range from crisp and citrusy picpoul to weightier, full bodied blends, and the powerful red blends that bespeak the garrigue, the warmth of the sun, and the mistral winds. These are some of my favorites, so I hope you will join on this adventure.
Friday, November 20th 6-9pm – $95
Thanksgiving the French Way: Given the season, I thought it would be fun to challenge Chef Julien with designing a Thanksgiving menu with a French flair. He has some great ideas for making elegant French dishes with our typical Thanksgiving pantry: turkey, squash, sauces/gravy, cranberries, potatoes. he is excited to work with you on a French meal that you can reproduce for your own tables. (There is a rumor about a French turducken!!) For the wines, we will work with American wines, as this is an American holiday, but French varietals: pinot noir, Grenache, and chardonnay, grapes that adorn a meal that needs fruit, acidity, and style.
Saturday, November 21st 10am-2pm – $95
The Market Class: This is a fun afternoon of shopping for ingredients and preparing a menu designed by the spontaneity of a visit to the local farmer’s market. We will start our culinary journey at the Aquidneck grower’s Market at 10am, where we will select meats, fish, and vegetables from local producers. Maybe we can grab something sweet from Olga’s Cup and Saucer! Then we head back to the kitchen with Chef Julien to prepare a hearty fall luncheon. The wines will be light, fruity and playful, as is the mood for luncheons, and selected from Beaujolais, a region in the southern most join of Burgundy, know for wonderful light body reds!
Sunday, November 22nd (wine tasting and 3 cooking demos 3-6pm) – $50/demo
Elegant Holiday Hors D’oeuvres: There will be three cooking demonstrations in the kitchen on Sunday, and you will be determining the menu by selection ingredients from the gourmet wall at Le Petit Gourmet for the chef to work with! This is going to be a blast!! Chef Julien has agreed to create “on the fly” recipes for great, simple hors d’oeuvres for easy holiday entertaining. Demos will be roughly 30 minutes long and held at 3, 4, and 5 pm.
Take all 3 and they will give you a bottle of French wine to take with you for your next party!
Cynthia Hurley Wines will be hosting a complimentary wine tasting in our dining room with several wonderful wines: Sparkling, whites, and reds all well suited for the upcoming holiday meal.
