What’sUpNewp has learned that there is possibility that the Newport Skating Center may return to Downtown Newport for the 2015/2016 skating season.
Due to the September 2014 sale of the Newport Yachting Center, the home of the Newport Skating Center for 14 years, by Newport Harbor Corp. to the Peregrine Group there was no ice skating in downtown Newport during the 2014/2015 skating season.

Michele Maker Palmieri, who ran Newport Waterfront Events (NWE), took over the company after the sale and started Waterfront Productions, LLC. Waterfront Productions is now the parent company for Newport Waterfront Events and RI Waterfront Events.

In a more recent interview, Palmieri has told What’sUpNewp.com that Waterfront Productions does have an opportunity to bring back the Newport Skating Center to Newport for the 2015/2016 Skating Season, but ONLY if they can get the funding they need to operate it.

The Newport Skating Center takes an enormous amount of maintenance and support to operate over the several months, especially with the unpredictability of the weather here in Newport.

Palmieri hopes to be able to make an announcement in late September or early October once they have a handle on support and if they can reach their funding and sponsorship goal to move forward.

If a business or individual is interested in becoming a sponsor or supporting the Newport Yachting Center, you’re encouraged to e-mail Michele Maker Palmieri at mmaker@newportwaterfrontevents.com.
