The Newport Art Museum is kicking off the fall season with a series of new programs. “Second Saturdays” (beginning September 12), “Drinks with Designers” (beginning September 17), and “Art After Dark” (beginning October 8), will join the ranks of the many events and educational programs the Museum currently offers in its galleries at 76 Bellevue Avenue, Newport. These will not replace existing Museum events but instead will supplement the programming currently being offered. Details are available at NewportArtMuseum.org.

“Second Saturdays,” a family oriented series to be held on the second Saturday of each month, featuring a variety of activities and performances, will launch Saturday, September 12, 10am – 12pm. Geared toward children ages 3 – 10 and their families, the event’s premiere will include a Dominican dance troupe, Grupo Arcoiris, performing on the Griswold House porch as part of Hispanic Heritage month, and an art making activity in the galleries. Admission is free.

“Drinks with Designers” will be held in partnership with DESIGNxRI as part of DESIGN WEEK RI (September 16 – 27) on Thursday, September 17, 6 – 7:30pm. The first in a new series, each event will feature two industry professionals, from two different design disciplines, who will present their work and share their inspiration in an effort to shed light on the Rhode Island design scene. The premiere event will feature Newport-based designers, Thomas Degremont, Naval Architect from Langan Design, and Tanya Kelley, Landscape Architect at PLACEstudio Landscape Design. Guests will be invited to mingle, have a drink and participate in an audience Q&A following the designer’s presentations. Drinks with Designers will be free with the price of general Museum admission (and free for Newport Art Museum members).

“Art After Dark” is a new late night event held each month during Newport Gallery Night. It will extend the Museum‘s hours even further, staying open until 10pm, with programming aimed to engage diverse audiences. The series will feature guided tours of the collection, art making opportunities, refreshments, and entertainment including live music, demonstrations, performances, films and more. The debut Art After Dark, scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 5 – 10pm, will offer special guided tours for children and late night tours for adults, a collaborative mixed media collage activity, faculty-led color-mixing workshop, and a mixologist session for adults. Admission is free. There will be a cash bar. In honor of Ethel Cushing, artist Howard Gardiner Cushing’s wife and favorite muse, redheads get one free specialty cocktail.
