The Maher Garden Center in Middletown, operated by the John L. Maher Center, will be closing temporarily at the end of 2015 for their seasonal closing. When it re-opens in the spring, it will have a whole new feel to it as far as operations and the people who work there.
The 17 employees with disabilities who currently work there will no longer will be there in March because of new state mandates that will change employment services for those with disabilities from center-based employment services to community-based.
Annette Bourbonniere, an activist for the rights of persons with disabilities and Ray and Virginia Heins, parents of a gentleman affected by programs at Maher Center closing, joined Ryan Belmore (Owner & Editor of What’sUpNewp) on The Open Forum on 1540 AM WADK Newport to discuss the issue on Tuesday, December 29th.
