Rhode Islanders who owe back state taxes will be able to settle them at a discount starting Dec. 3 under a 75-day amnesty program, the state Division of Taxation announced.
Taxpayers who qualify will have penalties waived and owe 75% of the interest, a 25% reduction, according to the division. To qualify, they must file all delinquent returns and pay the full tax plus that reduced interest during the amnesty window.
The program covers delinquent Rhode Island taxes for periods ending on or before Dec. 31, 2025. Eligible taxes include personal income tax, sales and use tax and corporate income tax, among others.
“If you have outstanding Rhode Island taxes, now is a good time to check that you have filed all delinquent returns, understand what you owe, and gather your records to be ready for Amnesty,” Tax Administrator Neena S. Savage said in a statement. “Resolving your back taxes can provide peace of mind and help you get back on track.”
Beginning in November, the division will mail an amnesty statement of accounts to every taxpayer with a known outstanding balance. Payments will not be accepted before Dec. 3.
The division said taxpayers who think they may owe should start now by gathering prior returns and records, confirming that delinquent returns have been filed, reviewing notices from the division, and consulting a tax preparer or accountant if needed.
