Brad Shear has resigned as chief executive officer of the Potter League for Animals after nine years, and two longtime former leaders have been appointed interim executive directors, the organization’s board announced Tuesday.
M. Christie Smith, who spent 35 years at the Potter League including a tenure as executive director, and Amy Chamard, who was there 28 years including as director of operations, will share the interim role.
“Their experience, knowledge of the organization and dedication to our mission will provide steady leadership as we look ahead,” said Jack Murphy, president of the board.
The board said Shear helped guide the organization through a period of significant growth and change in animal welfare, and thanked him for his service.
Shelter and adoption services, veterinary care, behavior and training programs, humane education and community support programs continue without interruption, according to the organization.
In a separate letter to supporters, the board noted that some already-scheduled emails and mailings may still carry Shear’s name, since they were prepared before the transition.
The board has begun searching for a permanent leader.
The Potter League, founded in 1929, operates its animal care and adoption center in Middletown and a spay and neuter clinic in Warwick.
