Ronald J. Lowenstein passed away on September 23, 2026 at Newport Hospital after a period of illness. He was a resident of Newport, Rhode Island, where he spent many happy years with his wife, Ronna (Ratner) Lowenstein.
Ron was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on November 12, 1942 to the late Gerhard “Gerry” Lowenstein and Evelyn (Isserlis) Lowenstein. He was a 1960 graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River and earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a Juris Doctor degree from Boston University School of Law. He was a partner in the law firm of Sherwin, Gottlieb and Lowenstein in Fall River and later practiced independently. He also served on the board of directors of Bay Coast Bank until December 2025.
Ron met his future wife Ronna in elementary school. They were high school sweethearts and married on August 14, 1966. Through 60 years of marriage, they were inseparable. They loved having dinner and meeting friends at their favorite Newport restaurants, spending time on their boat, and traveling together, especially to Block Island and Antigua.
One of Ron’s greatest joys was spending time on the water—sitting on his boat, looking out on Newport Harbor or watching a Red Sox game with Ronna. From May through September, Ron could almost always be found on his boat at the end of the main pier at the Newport Harbor Hotel Marina.
Ron was a natural entertainer. He loved to make people laugh—he had a whole repertoire of jokes and always stashed his fake thumb and other props in his pocket so he could perform silly magic tricks on a moment’s notice. He knew where all the pianos were in Newport’s bars and restaurants, and he jumped at the chance to play his favorite songs for friends and strangers alike. All year long he looked forward to being the official Christmas Eve entertainment at the Clarke Cooke House, which he did for many years. His photo still hangs in the corner where the piano was set up every year.
Ron was a beloved husband, father, and brother. In addition to his wife Ronna, he leaves behind his sons and daughters-in-law Douglas and Cecilia (Perry) Lowenstein and Jonathan and Leslie (Diffily) Lowenstein; his three grandchildren, Hailey, Jake, and Caroline Lowenstein; and his brother Elliot Lowenstein.
