Hundreds of skateboarders and fans filled Newport Skate Park on Saturday for the Friends of Newport Skatepark’s second annual Summer Bash, held in memory of Davey Rogers, a professional skateboarder for Beer City Skateboards who lived in Newport and died last year.
The day’s message centered on mental health and the importance of taking care of yourself.
Professional skateboarder Bam Margera attended and signed autographs for hours as attendees lined up to share stories about the impact he had on their lives.
Best trick winners were named in two age divisions. In the 9-and-under group, Jacquelynn Ryan, 7, and Hunter Mundell, 9, took top honors. In the 10-and-up group, winners were Gabriel Swanson, 10, Gino Bishop, 11, and Liam Smith, 13.
An 18-and-over “death race” sent skaters around the park in several rounds and heats. Dave Garcia of Providence won.
The event also featured live music, DJs and food and drink vendors including Diego’s, Boru and Del’s Lemonade.
