Geraldine "Babe" Nagle

Geraldine “Babe” (Barry) Nagle, 93, of Newport RI, the wife of the late William D. Nagle died Thursday, July 30th, 2026, at home surrounded by her family.

Born on July 15th, 1933 at home on Wellington Ave in the Fifth Ward, she was daughter of the late Lawrence Joseph “Joe” Barry and Anna “Babe” (Brice) Barry.

She attended Newport public schools graduating from Rogers High School in 1951. Upon graduation she was awarded a scholarship to study nursing at Salve Regina College, graduating in 1955. 

After graduating from Salve Regina University, she started her career in nursing with Visiting Nurses. After taking time off to start a family she accepted a position as a school nurse for the Newport School Department serving multiple elementary schools in the city.

Geraldine was a lifelong parishioner of St. Augustin’s Church where she was baptized, received her first communion, was confirmed and was married. She also volunteered her time, most recently sewing baptismal gowns.

She volunteered with many local groups including the Newport Genealogical Society where she traveled all over New England and Ireland doing genealogical research, Newport Historical Society where she gave walking tours all over Newport and the Newport Public Library’s “Friends of the Library” where she staffed the bookstore for many years.

She was also the caregiver of the family taking care of her mother, her husband, and her sister when they were extremely ill. She delivered bread, cakes and books to friends who were homebound.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband William D. Nagle, her sister Mary Jane Barry and her daughter Maureen Nagle Davin.

She is survived by her brother John Barry, her son Patrick Nagle, her granddaughters Beth Davin, and Megan Davin (Matt Miller) her great granddaughters Fiona and Ryland Davin-Miller.

The family would like to thank the nurses, CNAs and all the staff of Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, August 4th from 5:00-7:00pm at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 5th at 10:00am, St. Augustin’s Church, corner of Carroll & Harrison Ave, Newport. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Browns Ln, Middletown.
