The Preservation Society of Newport County will offer free admission to The Breakers on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Gilded Age mansion, a National Historic Landmark built from 1893 to 1895 as the summer home of railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his family, will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, with last entry at 4 p.m.

Reservations and timed tickets are not required. However, because the number of guests inside the house at any one time is limited, visitors may experience a wait before entering.

The free admission offer does not include The Breakers Third Floor Preservation in Progress or Beneath The Breakers specialty tours.

The Preservation Society recommends guests enjoy the free Breakers audio tour by downloading the Newport Mansions app to a mobile device and bringing earphones or earbuds. A family tour designed for younger visitors is also available in audio form.

The Preservation Society has owned The Breakers since 1972. The nonprofit organization, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, oversees 11 historic properties, seven of them National Historic Landmarks, spanning more than 250 years of American architectural and social development.
