The Heritage Restaurant Group announced Friday it will acquire Crisp Restaurant Group, including Providence Coal Fired Pizza’s two locations and Union Station Brewery in downtown Providence.
The transaction is expected to close within 90 days, subject to due diligence and approval processes. The acquisition marks Heritage Group’s strategic expansion into the Providence market, coming one day after the Newport-based company announced it would acquire Scales & Shells on Thames Street in Newport.
The deal includes the real estate for all three restaurant locations: Providence Coal Fired Pizza’s flagship downtown Providence location at 385 Westminster St. and its North Kingstown location at 6105 Post Road, as well as Union Station Brewery at 36 Exchange Terrace in downtown Providence.
All existing staff at the three locations will be retained and integrated into Heritage Group’s workforce of more than 1,000 hospitality professionals. Dave Bertolini, operating partner of Crisp Restaurant Group, will join Heritage Group to oversee the continued operation of the acquired concepts.

Providence Coal Fired Pizza opened its flagship downtown location in 2012, followed by the North Kingstown location in 2014. The restaurants are known for their signature coal-fired pizzas made with a three-day dough fermentation process and cooked at approximately 900 degrees using real coal. The pizzas feature proprietary mozzarella developed with Narragansett Creamery and house-made ingredients including sausage and oven-roasted vegetables.
Union Station Brewery, which opened in 1993 in the former Union Station train depot, is Rhode Island’s original brewpub. The brewery serves hand-crafted beer alongside classic American tavern fare and maintains a rotating selection of seasonal and specialty brews on tap. The location features a courtyard dining area and interior with high ceilings, exposed brick and dark wood.
Crisp Restaurant Group was formed in 2019 when a group of local restaurateurs, including the founders of Providence Coal Fired Pizza, purchased Union Station Brewery and united it with the pizza locations.

Lyons said Heritage Group is committed to making selective renovations and improvements while keeping the concepts consistent with their historical roots.
Heritage Group’s portfolio now includes restaurants, food trucks, and retail operations across Newport and Providence. In addition to the newly acquired locations, the company operates La Forge Casino Restaurant, The Reef, Caleb & Broad, and Olneyville New York System, along with several food trucks and retail businesses, including Newport Lobster Company and Newport Seafood Market.
