Multiple people were injured Thursday when a RIPTA bus overturned on the westbound side of the Newport Bridge near the toll plaza.

The crash occurred at 12:22 p.m. when the bus steered out of the westbound lane, went through a guardrail and rolled onto its side off the roadway, according to a social media post from the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department.

Due to the severity of the incident and number of patients involved, Newport Fire Department also responded to assist with the emergency response.

Fire crews worked to extricate and treat patients while ensuring the overturned bus was stabilized and secured. All patients were treated and transported to area hospitals, though the extent of injuries was not immediately available.

The Jamestown Fire Department deployed multiple units to the scene, including command vehicles, engines and rescue units. Newport Fire Department also sent command, rescue and engine companies to assist.

The cause of the crash was not immediately determined. No further details about the incident were available.
