Newport Police Department, Newport, RI

A civilian parking enforcement employee was assaulted while performing her duties in downtown Newport earlier this week, according to the Newport Police Department.

The employee was approached by an individual who became irate over a parking matter during the course of her work. The situation escalated when the suspect physically assaulted the employee, police said.

Newport police officers responded quickly and took the suspect into custody. The individual has been charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.

“I want to be clear, physically assaulting any city employee — regardless of the circumstances — is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Police Chief Ryan Duffy said in a statement. “Our civilian staff members are here to serve the community, enforce city ordinances, and help maintain the fairness and efficiency that residents, businesses, and visitors of Newport expect and deserve.”

The employee was not seriously injured and did not require medical attention, according to police. She is receiving appropriate support, and police commended her professionalism in handling the situation.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by municipal employees who interact with the public. The City of Newport employs civilian personnel across many departments to ensure the city operates smoothly and remains safe and welcoming, officials said.

The Newport Police Department said it remains committed to protecting all city employees and ensuring they can carry out their responsibilities free from threats, intimidation or violence.

Police did not release the name of the suspect or provide additional details about the specific parking matter that led to the altercation.
