Fort Adams Trust has opened its mysterious underground listening tunnels to the public for the first time, marking a significant expansion of the self-guided tour experience at the National Historic Landmark.

The narrow, brick-lined passageways were originally constructed in the 19th century as a covert military feature, allowing soldiers to detect approaching enemy intruders. These tunnels have long intrigued visitors who could only wonder about the hidden network beneath the historic fort.

“This is a major addition to our offering here at Fort Adams,” said Paul Marshall, Director at Fort Adams Trust. “Opening the listening tunnels to self-guided visitors allows us to share a hidden piece of military history in an immersive, unforgettable way.”

The tunnels represent one of Fort Adams’ most unique and mysterious features, offering visitors the chance to walk the same covert paths once used by soldiers to safeguard the fortification. The underground passages provide an authentic glimpse into 19th-century military strategy and the lengths taken to protect Newport’s strategic harbor.

The expansion was made possible through generous funding from Ocean State Charities Trust, which supported the development of new interpretive signage, safety improvements, and educational content designed to guide guests through the tunnels while explaining Fort Adams’ remarkable military history.

The listening tunnels are now included as part of the general admission self-guided tour and are accessible during the fort’s regular operating hours. Visitors can book self-guided or guided tours through the Fort Adams Trust website.

Fort Adams Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and activating Fort Adams through tours, community programs, and special events. The organization works to ensure the historic landmark remains a vibrant part of Rhode Island’s heritage.
