Heritage Restaurant Group has completed its acquisition of the beloved Olneyville N.Y. System Restaurants, bringing the James Beard Award-winning Rhode Island institution under the umbrella of one of its growing restaurant companies.

The deal, finalized Friday, includes both the Providence and Cranston locations of the iconic restaurant famous for serving “R.I.’s Best Hot Wieners” and coffee milk to generations of Rhode Islanders.

What’sUpNewp first reported in February that the legendary restaurant was expected to be sold, and now Heritage Restaurant Group has officially added the Olneyville N.Y. System to its extensive portfolio of local dining establishments.

“This restaurant has been in our family for generations, and it means the world to us—and to our loyal customers,” said Greg Stevens, former co-owner of Olneyville N.Y. System. “Partnering with Heritage Restaurant Group ensures that the legacy we’ve built will continue to thrive. We’re confident they’ll honor our history while bringing new energy and resources to support the next chapter of Olneyville N.Y. System.”

The acquisition represents a significant expansion for Heritage Restaurant Group, which already operates a collection of Rhode Island restaurants, including Flo’s Clam Shack locations in Middletown and Portsmouth, The Red Parrot, The Reef, and Brick Alley Pub in Newport. The company also owns Newport Craft Brewing, La Forge Casino Restaurant, and all three Wally’s Wieners locations, as well as numerous other establishments across the Ocean State.

For Olneyville N.Y. System, the sale ensures the continuation of a Rhode Island tradition that has attracted national attention over the years. The restaurant has welcomed Food Network personalities Guy Fieri and Alton Brown, as well as New England sports legend Rob Gronkowski, cementing its status as a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists seeking authentic Rhode Island cuisine.

“The Olneyville N.Y. System Restaurants aligns with our vision of showcasing iconic culinary experiences that resonate with patrons,” said Michael Anderson, spokesperson for Heritage Restaurant Group. “This acquisition demonstrates our commitment to growth while preserving the authentic Rhode Island dining traditions that make these restaurants special.”

Heritage Restaurant Group has emphasized that the Olneyville N.Y. System will maintain its beloved traditions and continue operating under its established brand. Customers can expect the same classic Rhode Island experience that has made it a local favorite for decades, while benefiting from Heritage’s operational expertise and resources.
