Portsmouth High School’s girls basketball team has clinched a place in the Elite 8 of the Rhode Island State Tournament after beating Tiverton 50-30 on Friday.

The sixth-seeded Patriots shook off a sluggish start, pulling ahead in the second half to take down the 11th-seeded Tigers on their home court.

The game kicked off with a neck-and-neck first quarter, ending in an 8-8 deadlock. Portsmouth managed to build a seven-point lead by halftime and kept widening the gap as the game progressed.

With this win under their belt, Portsmouth (14-6) is set to take on third-seeded Barrington (18-6) in the Elite 8. The teams will face off on Monday, March 10, at 6 p.m. at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Knight Campus in Warwick.
