Newport Police and Homeland Security have arrested a 23-year-old man on charges of possessing child pornography.

Ryan McElwee of Newport was taken into custody on December 5, 2024, following a joint investigation by local police and Homeland Security Investigations. Authorities searched McElwee’s home, leading to one count of child pornography possession.

After his arrest, McElwee appeared in 2nd Division District Court for arraignment. He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance.

Over the past several months, the Newport Police Department and Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), have been conducting an investigation into an individual who was suspected of acquiring child pornography via the internet. As a result of that investigation, a search warrant was obtained for a residence in Newport.

On December 5, 2024, Detectives from the Newport Police Department, along with members of HSI, conducted the search warrant and arrested 23-year-old Ryan McElwee of Newport on 1 count of possession of Child Pornography.
