Dear Editor,
We urge Ward 2 voters to consider seriously Matt Grant for the Ward 2 City Councilor seat. Matt is a highly intelligent young man who has thoroughly researched the issues facing Newport and its citizens, and considered them thoughtfully. He brings a sorely-needed fresh perspective to the issues that face the city.
For too long a go-along, get-along mentality has permeated our city’s government. The maintenance of our infrastructure has not been addressed properly for years. We finally have a clear-eyed analysis of Newport’s infrastructure needs, and the news is sobering indeed. It is time to have fresh, younger voices in our government who can bring us into the 21st century. The city needs to take bold action to support our workforce with affordable housing and a strong public-school system, and to be able to tackle the existential threat of climate change.
Matt has the skills, intelligence and curiosity to undertake this challenge. Furthermore, he is committed to governing with a style that is less confrontational than we have seen recently coming from some council members. He believes in solution-oriented collaboration, and his mild-mannered personality will help him in these efforts. Matt deserves the votes of Ward 2 residents.
