The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced today it will resume temporary road closures in Providence and East Providence on Tuesday, October 15, as crews resume demolishing the old Washington Bridge.

Starting Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m., a section of Waterfront Drive in East Providence will be closed at the I-195 overpass for about one week. Drivers will be detoured to Valley Street, which runs parallel to Waterfront Drive. A short section of Valley Street will have a gravel riding surface, RIDOT said.

Also on Tuesday at 9 p.m., a section of Gano Street in Providence will be closed at the I-195 overpass. Deck hammering will occur overnight for three nights before transitioning to daytime.

Gano Street will continue to be closed Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for other demolition activities. RIDOT later in October said it may schedule a full weekend closure of Gano Street to remove the beams. Once this schedule is confirmed, RIDOT will provide additional information.

When Gano Street is closed, drivers will be detoured to India Street, Wickenden Street, South Main Street and South Water Street. The on-ramp to I-195 West at Gano Street will remain open.
