Fall is the perfect time to take a guided tour of Island Cemetery! The cemetery is an outdoor sculpture park and arboretum with as much history as the city of Newport. Tickets for all events can be purchased using this link.
September 14th– Gilded Age Tour of Island Cemetery
The season starts with a tour featuring the men and women who were notable in the Gilded Age in Newport and New York City. They built summer cottages and year-round homes and shaped the city as it appears today. The tour will visit the graves of architects, explorers, civil rights leaders, politicians, and the Belmont Chapel. Use this link for tickets. Tickets are $15 person for adults and $5 per child under the age of 5 years.
October 5th– The Spirits of Island Cemetery
Members of the Dirty Blue Shirts will present a variety of people at their grave sites. This living history event has the choice of three start times; 1pm, 2pm, and 3 pm. The event lasts about 1.5 hours and will include a visit inside the Belmont Chapel, the recipient of recent preservation awards. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. October 26th– Richard Morris Hunt and Island Cemetery
Hunt was one of the most important architects in American history. His talent and vision brought respect to his profession in the mid-19th century and helped to create the impressive building style of the Gilded Age.
Island Cemetery has several connections to the man and his work. This tour will include the graves of people he designed buildings for in New York and Newport, monuments designed by Hunt, and the Hunt family burial lot. The tour will conclude inside the Belmont Chapel that was enhanced by Hunt.
Offered this fall will be the Highlights Tour that includes some of the people who made the city what it is today. The September special tour will feature Gilded Age Graves and October will focus on Richard Morris Hunt.
All tours start at the Warner Street entrance to the site at 10am and end in the Belmont Chapel. Tickets are $15 person for adults and $5 per child under the age of 5 years. Use this link for tickets.
September 28th, October 12th, November 9th, and November 23rd -Highlights of Island Cemetery tour
History of the city, the state, the nation, and the world are reflected in the people buried here. Our picturesque landscape is enhanced with sculptural monuments, some designed by leading architects of their day. The tour will provide a glimpse into this remarkable Newport place. The tour includes a visit inside the Belmont Chapel. The site has recently been restored and received preservation awards for the work completed.
Tours start at the Warner Street entrance at 10am and will last between an hour to an hour and a half.
