Patrick Murphy, a celebrated artist and photographer from Newport, is set to launch his latest venture, “House of Waves,” this Saturday at 154 Broadway. The new space promises to be a dynamic hub for creativity and community, embracing a spirit of innovation and flexibility.
The Genesis of House of Waves
The idea for House of Waves emerged serendipitously. “Quickly,” Murphy told What’sUpNewp. “I was having a drink at Caleb & Broad, and Rich Willis (owner of C&B) was joking around, telling me to get a job and open a shop again.” This playful nudge led to Murphy signing a lease just a few doors down at the former record shop. “I felt like something was missing, like I didn’t have my superpower anymore,” Murphy shared. “I did everything that I wanted to do after The Kings Lens and Friends turned the chapter, and I missed bringing people together.” He credits the building’s managers, Rob and Evan, for giving him the opportunity to revitalize the area.

Embracing Broadway’s Vibrant Community
Murphy, who grew up just a block away on Lincoln Avenue, has witnessed the evolution of Broadway firsthand. He is enthusiastic about being part of this thriving area. “It’s a great place to be and exactly where I should be,” he said. “I am surrounded by friends and support, and young entrepreneurship in Caleb & Broad, Mend, Nitro Bar. It was an easy decision when I already feel at home in that area”
A Space Like No Other
When asked about what to expect from House of Waves, Murphy prefers to keep an air of mystery and excitement. “I want people to NOT know what to expect,” he told What’sUpNewp. The venue is designed to be versatile, hosting art shows, events, workshops, and more. While there will be a gallery presence featuring Murphy’s personal art for sale, it won’t be a rotating gallery like The Kings Lens and Friends. “That was a beautiful time in my life, but there was nothing more that needed to be done at TKL&F. That chapter is in the past. I am excited for what’s in store next.”

Inspired by Life’s Waves
The name House of Waves reflects Murphy’s recent experiences and a new direction in his creative journey. A significant inspiration came from a trip to Cape Cod, where he encountered a long-standing secret art society. “I always want to build a community before I build a business,” Murphy explained. Unlike The Kings Lens and Friends, House of Waves is envisioned as a chameleon space, adapting to the needs of the moment. “Waves come in all shapes and sizes and are constant. I wanted to curate a home for patrons of the art and a haven for artists and the misfits. I think that is what we’re bringing to the table here.”

Grand Opening Event
House of Waves opens its doors on Saturday, June 22, from 5-9 pm. The event will feature refreshments courtesy of Point Wine & Spirits, and all ages are welcome. Murphy has hinted at a theme of “keys” on his social media, suggesting that they will play a significant role in the new venture. “Keys unlock doors, you’re going to want to have one.”
Acknowledgments
Murphy extends heartfelt thanks to David Daisy for his help with the logo and unofficial creative direction, Marcello Torres for his design, support, and friendship, and his father, who dedicated countless hours to preparing the space for its debut. Along with others, Murphy would be remiss to acknowledge the countless support he’s seen over the last 3 weeks and the engagement he’s encountered via social media. “It’s been fun to play around and keep people guessing, but we are ready to introduce House of Waves to Newport this weekend. It’s time.”
