On March 14, the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) held a virtual graduation ceremony for 272 students in its College of Distance Education (CDE).
This graduating class was the first class of the recently remodeled program, which offers students a more robust learning management system. The top 5% of graduates received the highest distinctions, while the top 15% earned distinctions.
“Your charge now is to use the education you have received here to link what you have just learned to how we fight, how you frame problems, how you develop and assess solutions in the future, and how you build winning teams,” said Stephen Mariano, Ph. D., provost at NWC. “This is just one part of the continuum of learning throughout your career.”
The online program, which provides students with the fundamentals of military strategy, U.S. national security policy, and joint military operations, is offered to officers and civilians seeking higher responsibility positions in the naval and maritime affairs.
At the end of the ceremony, Steven Pierce, D.M., interim dean of CDE, encouraged graduates to stay connected with their classmates and professors and to take advantage of the resources offered by the NWC alumni organization.
“I strongly encourage you to take advantage of all that the alumni organization offers in lifelong learning opportunities, remain current in naval and maritime affairs, and reconnect with your classmates and professors,” he said.
Established in 1884, NWC is the oldest institution of its kind in the world. With over 50,000 students graduated since it opened its doors for the first time in 1885, NWC has provided education and training opportunities to thousands of aspiring naval and maritime officers from around the world. Today, about 300 of NWC’s alumni serve as active-duty admirals, generals, and senior executive service leaders in their respective countries.
