The Town of North Kingstown has announced the appointment of Captain John Urban, Jr. as the city’s next police chief. The appointment will be taken to the North Kingstown Town Council for approval on March 25. If approved, Urban will become the 11th Chief of the town’s police department.

“I am proud and honored to appoint this decorated and respected 22-year veteran of the North Kingstown Police Department as its next Chief,” Mollis stated. “I have had the opportunity to conduct numerous individual meetings with the Command Staff of our Department and John Urban has the respect and admiration of what I consider the finest Command Staff in all of law enforcement. John is well respected by his peers in law enforcement throughout the State, has respect from his partners in Public Safety in North Kingstown, and knows the department inside out after having worked through the ranks and various positions of the Department. In his 22-years with our police department, John has served as a Patrol Officer, School Resource Officer, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Administrative Lieutenant, and Administrative Captain before becoming Acting Chief with the retirement of Chief Pat Flanagan.”

Urban began his career with the North Kingstown Police Department in 2002. He has served in numerous capacities including patrol officer, school resource officer, detective, patrol sergeant, detective sergeant, patrol lieutenant, administrative lieutenant, and administrative captain. In 2019, Urban was named acting chief of the department following the retirement of Chief Pat Flanagan.

Urban is a North Kingstown resident and decorated 22-year veteran of the city’s police department. He has served in numerous capacities including patrol officer, school resource officer, detective, patrol sergeant, detective sergeant, patrol lieutenant, administrative lieutenant, and administrative captain.
