The Preservation Society of Newport County will host “Gilded Metropolis: Newporters at Home – in New York” on Friday, October 21, 2016

This half-day Study Day is offered in partnership with the Newport Restoration Foundation, Newport Historical Society and Newport Art Museum.  It will include several distinguished experts exploring the opulent primary residences and social context of the Vanderbilts and other notable families in metropolitan New York, far from the summer colony at Newport, at the dawn of the 20th century.

The lectures will take place at The Breakers Stable & Carriage House, 53 Coggeshall Avenue in Newport, from 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Individual presentations will be provided by four distinguished lecturers:

  • An Aristocracy of Wealth: The Gilded Age in New York   

Jeannine Fallino, critic, museum consultant & independent curator

  • New York’s Private Clubs: Gilded Refuges

Dr. Mosette Broderick, Director of Urban Design & Architecture Studies; Director, MA in Historical and Sustainable Architecture; and London Director, Urban Design in London Summer Program, New York University

  • The Lost Vanderbilt Homes of New York City

Robert King, author & architectural historian 

  • Newporters at Home – in New York

Paul Miller, Curator, The Preservation Society of Newport County
