Weather has forced last-minute changes to the remaining stops on Newport’s “Candidate Signature Events Tour,” a series of park gatherings organized by City Councilor-at-Large Steph Smyth to give residents a chance to meet candidates and sign nomination papers.
Monday’s scheduled event at Battery Park has been cancelled, as has Tuesday’s gathering at Miantonomi Park. In their place, a new stop has been added for Tuesday, July 7, at the Newport Public Library’s Friends Room from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Battery Park will get a second chance Wednesday, July 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9, will now feature two back-to-back stops: Braga Park from 4 to 5:30 p.m., followed by King Park from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The revised schedule for the remaining tour dates is as follows:
Monday, July 6 — Battery Park, 5–7 p.m.(cancelled)Tuesday, July 7 — Miantonomi Park, 5–7 p.m.(cancelled)- Tuesday, July 7 — Newport Public Library, Friends Room, 4:30–6:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, July 8 — Battery Park, 4–6 p.m.

All events remain weather-dependent.
Candidates seeking elected office in Newport or at the state level are invited to participate. Registered Newport voters can meet the candidates, ask questions, and sign nomination papers. Candidates must collect the required number of signatures to have their names appear on the November ballot and are asked to bring their nomination papers.
