American Racing Challenger Team USA, representing Sail Newport, has been confirmed as an official challenger for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup, bringing the United States back to the storied competition ahead of the 2027 event in Naples, Italy.

The team is the vision of entrepreneurs Karel Komárek and Chris Welch and will be led by Newport sailor Ken Read, a two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. The team has acquired key assets from American Magic, including the AC75 yacht Patriot and two AC40 platforms, giving the program an immediate foundation ahead of the Naples competition.

Without the confirmation of American Racing Challenger Team USA, the 2027 edition would have marked the first America’s Cup since 1851 without a U.S. entry — a remarkable prospect given that the United States won the trophy in its inaugural race and successfully defended it for 132 consecutive years, the longest winning streak in sporting history.

“Having the opportunity to represent the United States once again in the America’s Cup is a tremendous honor,” said Read. “We’re under no illusion about the challenges ahead and we’re fully focused on building a team that can win the Cup.”

Sail Newport, the Newport-based nonprofit that serves as the team’s challenging yacht club, has been a partner in the initiative from the start. US Sailing has also joined the effort, with a shared focus on youth development and expanding opportunities for female sailors.

“Sail Newport was founded when the America’s Cup left Newport in 1983 to keep sailing strong and accessible,” said Sail Newport President Chris Long. “To now be part of the America’s Cup at the highest level is incredibly meaningful for us.”
