Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day returns to Newport on April 14, with the Thames Street location offering free scoops to the public from noon to 8 p.m.
The annual tradition, which began in 1979, has grown into a global event spanning more than 35 countries. Last year, Ben & Jerry’s served more than 1 million free scoops worldwide.
The Newport location at 359 Thames St. is marking this year’s event with a community partnership. Members of the Kiwanis Club of Newport will be on hand throughout the day to scoop ice cream and share information about the organization’s youth-focused work in the community.
“Free Cone Day has always been about gratitude — we want to thank our fans for being the best fans in the world with free ice cream and a moment of pure joy,” said Tyler Rosenberg, the Newport franchisee.
The Newport shop has been in operation for more than 35 years. Free Cone Day traces its roots to 1979, when co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield handed out free scoops as a thank-you to customers who helped the fledgling Burlington, Vermont, shop survive its first winter.
