Salve Regina University will host a free public panel discussion exploring the history of America’s founding and the enduring relevance of its founding ideals on Tuesday, March 3, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the O’Hare Academic Building on Shepard Avenue in Newport.
The event, titled “America 250,” comes as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its independence and will examine the legacy of the American Revolution alongside the challenges facing those ideals today. An open Q&A will follow the panel, giving community members an opportunity to participate in the discussion.
The panel will feature three Salve Regina scholars: Dr. Mary Anderson, the David and Carolyn Brodsky Chair in Constitutional Democracy and Culture and a political science professor; Dr. William Leeman, a history professor; and Colin Woodard, a New York Times best-selling author and director of the Pell Center’s Nationhood Lab. Dr. Jim Ludes, director of Salve’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, vice president of strategic initiatives and assistant professor of history, will moderate.
“This discussion is a great opportunity to look at the American Revolution not just as an event in history, but as something that produced ideas and documents that are incredibly relevant to our country today,” Leeman said. “We encourage all members of the community to join us in what promises to be a great conversation.”
The event is free and open to the public. The O’Hare Academic Building is located on Shepard Avenue in Newport.
