The Newport String Project will present a free community concert at Ochre Court at Salve Regina University on Sunday, March 22, at 3 p.m., featuring its resident ensemble alongside internationally acclaimed guest musicians.
The centerpiece of the program will be Frank Bridge’s String Sextet in E flat Major, a sweeping work first performed in 1912 that has seen renewed interest in recent years. The Newport String Quartet — violinists Ealaín McMullin and Kenneth Trotter, violist Florrie Marshall and cellist Chelsea Bernstein — will be joined by guest artists Jesse Holstein on viola and Elizabeth Cook on cello for the rarely heard piece.
The concert will open with Henry Purcell’s Chacony in G minor, Z. 730.
Ochre Court, the Gothic Revival mansion on the Salve Regina campus, provides what organizers describe as an intimate yet breathtaking backdrop for the performance. The annual free community concert is a highlight of the Newport String Project’s season, offering local audiences access to works seldom performed on the concert stage.
Admission is free. Registration is available at newportstringproject.org.
