Mews Tavern (Mews Tavern)

The Mews Tavern, a longtime South County gathering spot that has operated on Main Street since 1947, is set to change hands after Heritage Restaurant Group announced Monday it is under contract to acquire the Wakefield establishment.

The transaction is expected to close later this year, pending customary approvals. The restaurant will continue operating at its 456 Main St. location.

“The Mews Tavern is part of Wakefield’s identity,” said Matt Lyons, spokesperson for Heritage Restaurant Group. “Our mission is to protect and strengthen what already matters. In an environment where independent restaurants face unprecedented pressure, helping ensure The Mews’ future is exactly why Heritage was formed.”

What began as a small fisherman’s tavern nearly 80 years ago has grown into a South County institution, known for its three bars, 69 beers on tap, scratch kitchen and a large dining room regulars call the “tree room.”

George McAuliffe, general manager of The Mews Tavern, said he will stay on with the new ownership.

“It was incredibly important that The Mews’ next chapter be written with care,” McAuliffe said. “This restaurant has always been more than a business — it’s a home for our staff, our regulars, and the Wakefield community. Heritage Restaurant Group understands what The Mews represents, and I’m confident they will honor its legacy while providing the support needed for long-term success.”

Heritage Restaurant Group, headquartered at 186 Bellevue Ave. in Newport, specializes in acquiring and operating established restaurants. The company completed its acquisition of Jo’s American Bistro on Memorial Boulevard in Newport last month.

The group’s portfolio includes La Forge Casino Restaurant, Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant, Red Parrot, The Reef, Caleb & Broad, Flo’s Clam Shack, Olneyville New York System, Scales & Shells, Providence Coal Fired Pizza and Union Station Brewery.

“This is about preservation, not expansion,” Lyons said. “The Mews has been a gathering spot with history and heart. Our role is to keep the soul intact, invest thoughtfully, and ensure it remains a vibrant part of South County for generations to come.”
