Freshman forward Lorelei Blanchard scored in the first period and the East Bay Riptide held on for a 1-0 victory over the Northern RI Yeti Co-Op in a girls hockey game played Friday night at Portsmouth Abbey.

The game was played in support of Sophie’s Squad, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness around mental health for athletes. Parents held a raffle throughout the game to raise funds for the organization.

Blanchard found the back of the net at 1:55 in the first period on an even-strength goal, with sophomore forward Raelin Nary picking up the assist.

From there, the Riptide locked down defensively, keeping possession throughout the second and third periods to preserve the shutout.

East Bay’s goaltender Brooklyn Sclama turned aside all 11 shots she faced to earn the clean sheet. Northern RI Yeti goalie Emily Raimondi made 19 saves on 20 shots in a strong effort in the loss.

The Riptide also debuted new team jerseys designed by the players’ moms for the occasion.

After the final buzzer, East Bay gathered at center ice for a celebratory team photo with a Sophie’s Squad sign.

Sophie’s Squad provides education and awareness to improve the mental health of athletes by encouraging open conversations and emphasizing that seeking help is a sign of strength. More information can be found at sophiessquad.org.
