High school seniors with artistic talent and ambition are invited to apply for the Tinney Family Arts Scholarship Award, a $2,000 prize given annually to a Newport County student pursuing excellence in the arts.
The Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County is accepting applications through Friday, May 8, for the scholarship, which will be awarded in May.
Applicants must be high school seniors or home-schooled students living in Newport County who have demonstrated artistic talent and plan to continue their studies in an arts discipline. All areas of the arts will be considered, including fine arts, visual arts, illustration, graphic design, multimedia, performing arts, creative writing, poetry, music performance, composing and theatre.
The scholarship has been awarded since 2017 by Harle Tinney in memory of the Tinney family, who were accomplished restorers, artists and musicians. The family taught “lost arts” such as woodcarving, gold leafing and wrought iron work to aspiring artists.
The Tinney family is best known for saving Belcourt Castle in Newport from demolition in the mid-20th century. They restored and maintained the building until its sale in 2012.
Scholarship requirements, application information, guidelines and a list of previous awardees are available at newportarts.org.
