Newport County is bracing for a one-two punch of winter weather this weekend, with dangerously cold temperatures arriving tonight followed by a potentially significant snowstorm Sunday into Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the region from Sunday morning through Monday evening. Forecasters say 8-15 inches of snow is possible, with conditions that could make travel very difficult to impossible.
“The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes,” the NWS said in its advisory.
Before the snow arrives, a cold weather advisory takes effect at 10 p.m. Friday and runs through 10 a.m. Saturday. Wind chills as low as 20 below zero are expected, which could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Residents are urged to wear appropriate clothing, hats and gloves if venturing outside during the cold snap.
For the storm, forecasters advise delaying all travel if possible. Those who must drive should use extreme caution, leave extra room between vehicles, allow extra travel time and avoid sudden braking or acceleration.
Roads, bridges and overpasses are expected to become slick and hazardous during the storm.
