Three Newport County nonprofits will share in $636,000 in grants from the Rhode Island Foundation to support low-cost veterinary care, animal rescue and educational programs.

The Potter League for Animals in Middletown received the largest local grant at $72,000 to subsidize veterinary care at its Animal Care and Adoption Center. The funding supports spaying, neutering, vaccinations, microchipping and specialized surgeries.

“Over the past two years, we have seen a growing demand for our services because of rising costs at private veterinary clinics,” said Brad Shear, Potter League’s chief executive officer.

The organization has administered at least 3,028 veterinary exams, 612 spay and neuter surgeries, 150 other surgeries and more than 3,383 vaccinations to date.

West Place Animal Sanctuary in Tiverton received $30,000 for its animal nutritional, medical and enrichment program. The organization shelters more than 100 farm animal rescues at any given time and works with police departments and animal control officers on cases involving cruelty or neglect.

The Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown received $10,200 for its Animal Ambassador Program, which enables the public to interact with wild and rehabilitated native animals.

“Our goal is to cultivate an understanding and appreciation for wildlife within our community,” said Kaity Ryan, executive director.

Other grant recipients statewide include Animal Rescue Rhode Island, the Audubon Society, the Rhode Island Pet Project and the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“The delight that pets bring to our lives carries over into our own health and well-being,” said David N. Cicilline, the foundation’s president and CEO.
